  • Anti-aliasing in 3D? (developer aimed questions)

There has been some buzz around the net that the game has some level of AA running in 3D mode. It has been stirring debate on some 3DS forums because most thought this was in fact impossible (at least with current 2D AA algorithms). So, my questions are:

    1. Is there AA in 3D?
    2. If so, was is necessary to build your own algorithm? How does that algorithm differ from regular 2D uses?
    3. What level of AA is in use (2x, 4x, etc.)?

    Thanks!

from what i know of the 3DS, 3D mode does not use AA on any game, at all. too much processing power would be needed for 3D AA.

as for the game in 2D mode, looking at the pictures and turning on and off 3D mode, it looks like 2x AA is used. i could be wrong though.

2x AA isn't supported with any mode in this game. The first game that use 2x AA in 2D mode is "Resident Evil: Revelations" as far as I know.

Actually, one of the first 3DS games to support AA was Street Fighter (only in 2D mode), which was a launch game. And Zen Pinball does have AA on all the time (both 2D and 3D).

          uh, what?

no game uses AA in 3D mode...not even zen pinball.

here, i took two pictures of OoT in 2d and 3d (turn 3D on, press the Home button, go to the game notes, it keeps the 3D image in memory)

(these images are HUGE, 4MB each)
          OoT 2D image is here
          OoT 3D image is here

Zen Pinball 2D image is here

from the looks of it, Zen Pinball does not use AA at all.

i think this game does not even need AA, it would just take up too much power.

Thanks for the pictures. You've just proved me right. They show the AA quite well. It's most obvious if you look at the wire rails that form the tracks.
