Stuck on "Homecoming"

I've got 5 stars on every other mission up until "Homecoming" where I'm completely stuck. It's the mission where you run around as a level 1 Viking hero trying to keep the enemy from stealing your flag. I can't even beat this on casual which means I can't unlock the hero and level him up. Is there a key to this mission that I'm missing? I don't understand how I'm supposed to kill a huge hoard of enemies that are much higher level than me.

This one was pretty hard for me too! I think I just stayed near the flag and tried to kill anyone who came near it. It took me a few tries, but eventually I made it.
