Can't play online!

My story: online mode worked for 1 game (didn't try more often). Bought the DLC today. Wanted to play vs. a friend. He got the error his game is not compatible with my DLC game. Bought the DLC for him, too. Still we can't play versus or coop, inviting (Steam) doesn't work nor do automatically assigned ranked matches work.

PS Weren't you supposed to have 20k gold to spend on upgrades? I only had 9k and still all my troops and gear had level 1.

There are many complaints on the Steam forum, too. People can't play online after buying the DLC. Please help, Barbie.

Playing against a Steam friend now worked. How does MP work? I only had 9k gold to upgrade my units. I quit MP, loaded MP again, still had no gold and my upgrades were the same as last time. Can't I reselect them? Are you supposed to farm gold before playing MP to have enough gold to upgrade? Or how does the system work?
