  • Operator's Menu Navigation Guide

I notice that a lot of people are not taking advantage of the Operator's Menu (OM) in the game. Perhaps it's confusing, since the OM is similar to how it looks like on a real pinball machine. It's a real shame too since the OM has a lot to offer, especially to those that are new to pinball and want to make the game easier or to those that just want a challenge.

This guide will help you navigate through the Operator's Menu and will explain what does what.

First off, to activate the Operator's Menu. You will first need to load one of the tables and pause the game. There will be a list of options to choose from and one of those will be the Operator's Menu.

The Operator's Menu contains the following sections:
    • Adjustments
    • Book Keeping
    • Tests
    • Utilities

I will explain in detail on what each one of these terms mean and what each one does.

Adjustments: This section has three options.
    • Standard Adjustments - This is where you can adjust the number of Balls (1-10), the number of Extra Balls (0-10), the number of Tilt Warnings, and the length of the Ball Save for your game.
    • Feature Adjustments - This is where you can adjust the unique features on each table. This section allows you to adjust the Mode Timers, adjust the Difficulty on most parts/modes/missions, and toggle the Holds (allows certain things such as kickbacks to carry over to the next ball) among other things.
    • Physical Adjustments - This section allows you to change the Slope/Incline of the table and the Rubber Locations on the outlanes and slingshots. In other words, these options allow you to control the ball speed and the amount of ball draining.

**Note: Adjusting any of the features in the Adjustments section will deactivate the ability to post your scores on the leader boards. Also, you won't be able to obtain the trophies/achievements. Everything in the Adjustments section must be at their Factory Setting for you to post leader board scores and to obtain trophies/achievements.**

**Tip: You can easily reset the Adjustments back to their Factory Settings by going to the Utilities section (see below) of the Operator's Menu.**

Book Keeping: This section just lists and keeps track of your data, such as the scores, statistics, and the number of times you have used a part (flippers, bumpers, etc...). There are four options in this section.
    • Main Audits - This just lists the basic statistics, such as the total number of balls played, total number of extra balls you have earned, the total number of tilts, etc...
    • Standard Audits - This lists the total number of times you have used the basic parts, such as the flippers, slingshots, bumpers, kickbacks, etc...
    • Feature Audits - This lists the total number of times you have used or played the parts/missions/modes that are unique to that table.
    • Histograms - This lists the score averages and game times for the table.

**Note: Most of this data can be viewed in the Statistics section in the game's Options Menu.**

Tests: - This is a fun little section. You can test all of the lamps, lights, flashers, DMD animations, and the audio (sound effects and music) in this section. Think of it as the sound and display tests that you see in other video game option screens. The options in this section vary from table to table, so I'm not going to bother listing them here. However, this is the place to go if you want to hear the table's soundtrack.

Utilities: - This section allows you to reset certain features, adjust the table difficulty, and it also contains extra adjustments that won't harm your scoring or trophy/achievement status. There are 5 options in this section.
    • Factory Adjustments - This is where you can reset all of the Adjustments (see above) that you made back to their Factory Settings.
    • Pre-Sets - This adjusts the table's difficulty settings to very easy, easy, normal, hard, or very hard.
**Note: Normal is the factory setting difficulty on each table. Changing the difficulty will prevent you from earning trophies/achievements or posting your scores on the leader boards.**
    • Clear Audits - This resets all of the stuff in the Book Keeping section back to zero (see above).
    • Reset Local High Scores - It does what it says. This will reset your local high scores that are stored in your game save back to the manufacturer set scores.
    • Extra Features - This section allows you to change the color of the Dot Matrix Display (DMD) and adjust the Flipper Sensitivity. Some tables may have unique options located here.
**Note: Changing the settings in the Extra Features section **will** still allow you to obtain the trophies/achievements and will still allow you to post your scores onto the leader boards.**

I hope this guide was useful to you. If there are any questions about the Operator's Menu, feel free to ask them in this thread.

One Final Note: Some features/options will vary from table to table. For example, Civil War doesn't allow you to change the color of the DMD, since it already changes color depending on the side you have chosen and/or the event (the Standford Multiball) that is going on.

Very nice post, Shogun! You know this should be a sticky now One thing I had trouble with the last time I tried was listening to all of the voice overs for the X-MEN table. I remember being able to listen to a lot of them in Marvel Pinball, but I couldn't seem to find them under the test section in Zen Pinball 2. I think there were a few, but not all of them. This encourages me to try again.

I'll have to play around with that one and see what I can dig up. I only looked at the ZP2 versions of Tesla, Epic Quest and Civil War, when I was writing up this guide.

This is awesome Shogun! Snake's right. This should be a sticky. One question for clarification:

Changing the 'Pre-Sets' in the 'Utility' section will prevent posting scores and achieving trophies, correct?

          Correct!

The Pre-sets section is just a shortcut into changing all of the difficulty settings in the Adjustments section. For example, lets say I'm new to the game and I don't feel like changing all of the adjustments to "very easy' on the table. You can just go into the Pre-sets section (under Utilities) and have the game do it for you.

Update: The thread has been sticked and I updated the Test Section of the guide.

I found out that you can check out the DMD animations in the Tests Section.

Cool you got the sticky! I tried again to see if I could listen to all the voice overs, but I could only listen to 10 of them

Cool! I just read it. It should be noted that this is not limited Zen Pinball 2. It's the same for Pinball FX2 (360 and Win8), Marvel Pinball (PS3 and 3DS), and ZP1 (PS3, 3DS, iOS and Andriod).

I forgot to check out that table's OM again.

EDIT: Try the DMD Test. Many of the voice samples seem to be tied to the animations. That's what I noticed with Street Fighter 2 at least.

Very nice input. Thank you for the time you've spent on this thread.
I was wondering how does difficulty work? Does the game actually get easier to play? Do you know how it functions?
When talking about the unknown... Anything is possible.

I actually played around with it yesterday on the Excalibur table. The game can get much easier or much harder with the adjustments. I set everything to "very easy" and for good measure, I also adjusted the Standard Adjustments as well. I gave myself 10 balls, set the extra ball max to 10, turned off the tilt (gives you infinite nudging) and maxed the ball save timer (1 minute).

With the very easy difficulty, the mission timers were much longer and it required less ramp/orbit shots to complete the missions. It was much easier to acquire the extra balls and with infinite nudging, my ball rarely drained. It was almost like an ever lasting game. This is great for beginners that want to understand how the table works or would just like to see what a wizard mode is like.

When I was all done, I went back into the operator's menu, selected Utilities and reseted everything back to the factory settings with a push of a button.

Here's a little tip. Go to the Utilities section, then go to Pre-Sets. You can select the difficulty there and all of the parts/missions in the Feature Adjustments section will go to that difficulty.

I'm with everyone, this guide is great. I don't screw around with these settings much (read: ever), but it got me thinking. What are thoughts on the next tourney having some of these settings tweaked to better represent 'official' pinball tourney rules? I'm thinking turn extra balls off, auto tilt for slap backs, etc. You could even break it up into novice, intermediate, expert brackets by changing certain parameters. Just a thought...

Although it's neat idea, I doubt that it can be done with their current set up. The tournament section can't automatically change the settings in the OM and it will be hard to explain to casual fans that you must change such and such in the OM, before you can participate in a tournament.
