  • Playstation 4 and Zen Pinball

A quick inquiry about the Playstation 4.

With the PS4 going to an X86 processor architecture, I'm guessing that Zen Pinball 2 won't work on the console as is. (Sony has said that PS1, PS2, and PS3 games will be available through streaming, which I guess is a way to get around this.) The big decider about whether or not I buy a PS4 on Day One is, believe it or not, Zen Pinball 2. I love the game, and it represents most of my PS3 game time.

    - Do you have a plan to move your players to the PS4, either by making ZP3, or porting ZP2?
    - Will previous purchases move with us, the way they did from Zen Pinball 1 and Marvel Pinball to Zen Pinball 2, or will we have to buy all of these tables again?
    - Will the PS4's Zen Pinball be available during launch, or will we have to wait? Do you have a date?

Could you give us some idea of how you're dealing with this, even if it's just what you're talking about, internally?

    Thanks.

I'm really wondering about this as well. Ever since I started playing Pinball FX2 on my PC and experienced how clean and high res all the tables are, I haven't really wanted to go back and play on the consoles. I imagine that the PS4 would have the same amazing visuals as the PC so I'm very excited about this possibility.

Wow another one from Cleveland, OH. I was born and raised in Cleveland.

Anyway, I'm quite intrigued to find this out myself.

We don't know much yet except that we won't have a game at launch. We are developing on the system but are in the early stages, so we can't answer the other questions. Of course, we would like for players to be able to take their content with them from game to game and platform to platform when possible.

If, say, a hypothetical Zen Pinball 3 for PS4 allowed players to import their ZP2 collections, I'd be very pleased.

Well ZP2 just dropped 6 months ago. We won't be seeing ZP3 anytime soon. PBFX3 will be out before ZP3 would. Like Solitude said, they're in the early stages of tweaking and stuff so that ZP2 can be played on the PS4. I certainly can't wait. More than likely we'll get a release date sometime in 2014. Don't quote me on that.

Home Beta came to mind when hearing PS3 games could possibly stream through a PS4. I can't seem to see it running flawlessly without constant buffering.

That would be a nightmare for pinball games, which need a steady frame rate.

There's another possibility that I can see happening and it's something that Sony is offering now "Cross Buy". It wouldn't be too far fetched to see Sony adding the feature to the PS4. It would be very useful for Zen to say the least.

If they can do it between the PS3 and Vita I don't see why the PS4 wouldn't be able to get in on it.

I don't even know that we'll be making ZP2 forwards-compatible. All I know is that Sony is rumored to be doing backwards compatibility via Gaikai.

We definitely will keep you guys in the loop when we know more - it would definitely be a shame if content did not transfer over once we do have a game on PS4. It's possible that people would have to pay a small one-time fee as with songs in Rock Band 1 -> 2 -> 3.

You still plan on supporting the ps3 for a couple more years, right? I am on my second ps3 and don't plan on getting a ps4, at least not for few years

No plans to abandon any platforms when new consoles come out.

I'm fine with that. I wouldn't mind paying a small fee. I can only imagine how difficult this is going to be to get things situated for the next consoles.
