You can modify messaging and friend invite settings on the PSN and you can pretty much close them off to the public.

I personally only allow friends to send me messages, but I allow anyone to send me a friend invite (you can include a message in them).

I was going to suggest to Zen to send him/her an invite with a message enclosed.
