This is a problem I have with leaderboards on many, many games: what good is it to know I'm #245 if you don't tell me how many players there are in total? 245 out of 10,000 is pretty good. Out of 300, not so much.
To work around the issue, I used to have a fake Xbox Live account I only used to get the lowest possible score I could on every table, which gave me a rough idea of how many players there were. I am thinking of doing that again, but I really shouldn't have to. And it needlessly pollutes the boards if several people do it.
The Forza games do it best: they not only tell you how many players are listed, they also give you your percentile position on each board.
Is there a reason Pinball FX has never done that, or is it just an oversight?
