UPDATE: If you enable Standard graphics instead of Enhanced graphics, you get pretty acceptable 3D framerates. When I say
"acceptable" I mean compared with Enhanced graphics mode. There is some aliasing of lines, but you get used to it.
I decided to see what ZPHD looked like on my 22 inch LG CINEMA3D monitor (which uses non-powered glasses).
I was just expecting to be able to see the table on the monitor, and play with a bigger image.
After I selected the table and play mode, the table loaded. Then, BOOM!
The table loaded by default in 3D! Blown away was an understatement! The depth of field was amazing. I can now get a feeling about what console owners are treated to. Lucky buggers! ;-)
Compared to playing it on the tablet screen, the frame rate was very choppy. Definitely not the 60 fps normally output by ZPHD. I would guess it was about 30 fps. It reminded me of when the thread priority in The Pinball Arcade drops for a background task and the game starts to chug.
I would imagine that because each "eye" needs to be rendered separately, this causes the frame rate to halve.
The Darth Vader Star Wars table played "OK" considering frame rate drop.
But Paranormal really suffered. When shooting the cube, my ball warped to the pop bumpers a few times. And the Triangle top left eject behaved like the solenoid was stuffed. It dribbled out of the hole instead of rocketing out. The Nesse camera spinner chugged so slowly I really noticed each click of the camera.
I don't know what can be done about the performance, or even if this feature should be activated in mobile versions due to resource limitations.
Perhaps this should be a selectable output option in the menu. For me, I could disable the 3D mode on the monitor, but the frame rate still chugged when I did, probably because Zen was still pushing out all the resources required through HDMI.
Strangely though, the mirrored tablet display was ruining smoothly, so all these observations may be down to the 3D engine of the monitor.
Has anyone else discovered this feature?
