  • Surprise! Stereoscopic 3D graphics works through HDMI out on the TF300T.

UPDATE: If you enable Standard graphics instead of Enhanced graphics, you get pretty acceptable 3D framerates. When I say
"acceptable" I mean compared with Enhanced graphics mode. There is some aliasing of lines, but you get used to it.

I decided to see what ZPHD looked like on my 22 inch LG CINEMA3D monitor (which uses non-powered glasses).

I was just expecting to be able to see the table on the monitor, and play with a bigger image.

After I selected the table and play mode, the table loaded. Then, BOOM!

The table loaded by default in 3D! Blown away was an understatement! The depth of field was amazing. I can now get a feeling about what console owners are treated to. Lucky buggers! ;-)

Compared to playing it on the tablet screen, the frame rate was very choppy. Definitely not the 60 fps normally output by ZPHD. I would guess it was about 30 fps. It reminded me of when the thread priority in The Pinball Arcade drops for a background task and the game starts to chug.

I would imagine that because each "eye" needs to be rendered separately, this causes the frame rate to halve.

The Darth Vader Star Wars table played "OK" considering frame rate drop.

But Paranormal really suffered. When shooting the cube, my ball warped to the pop bumpers a few times. And the Triangle top left eject behaved like the solenoid was stuffed. It dribbled out of the hole instead of rocketing out. The Nesse camera spinner chugged so slowly I really noticed each click of the camera.

I don't know what can be done about the performance, or even if this feature should be activated in mobile versions due to resource limitations.

Perhaps this should be a selectable output option in the menu. For me, I could disable the 3D mode on the monitor, but the frame rate still chugged when I did, probably because Zen was still pushing out all the resources required through HDMI.

Strangely though, the mirrored tablet display was ruining smoothly, so all these observations may be down to the 3D engine of the monitor.

Has anyone else discovered this feature?

Has anyone with Android 4.2 tried to push game output using Miracast?

I am strongly considering going cord free when the TF300T gets 4.2.1 in a few weeks, but I'm not sure whether Miracast "just works" for any app.

That's pretty neat! But I think you're right on the money there--I don't think it was meant to be run that way

If this mode should not be activated on mobile, is it possible to turn the 3D output off when a user connects through HDMI. I would still like to have the option of playing ZPHD through a flat screen, using a controller, at full fps. I can do this on The Pinball Arcade, and it is awesome.

3D works if you sacrifice Standard for Enhanced graphics!!

Well, I have some good news of sorts.

You can make Stereoscopic 3D work pretty well if you are happy to settle for Standard (not Enhanced) graphics. The quality of ball movement is really quite acceptable, and there is a little bit of aliasing, but it is perfectly playable. You still get great depth of field, with the DMD and menu buttons sitting quite noticeably in front of the table.

Maybe you want to alert the devs to this and see if they might be able to squeeze a touch more performance out of 3D mode with Standard graphics enabled. I think enhanced graphics is a bit of a stretch for mobile devices.

Enhanced graphics just seems a little too much for the TF300T to output. Tablets with a better SoC may have better results with this.

Come on TF700 users, give this a go and let me know your results.

And now for some (hopefully temporary) bad news.

The recent update to Android 4.2.1 for the TF300T had clobbered support for 3D output due to a functionality regression with HDMI. I've raised a bug with ASUS directly, for what it's worth.

I have a nexus 7 2013 now, which I have a feeling would be able to push stereoscopic graphics on high detail.

Can someone from Zen please confirm whether stereoscopic 3D was intentionally removed from Zen Pinball HD, or whether what I experienced on the TF300T was caused by an Asus update.

I would need to purchase a SlimPort adapter to test this, so don't want to waste my money if the output mode has been removed completely from the app.

Update: Looks like the current build does not support 3D.
