  • Instant Crash on All Tables

I downloaded the update last night on Google Play, and this morning not a single table will play. Additionally, I can't download the new Football table.

    Steps to reproduce:

    1. On the main table select screen, tap the football icon twice.
    2. Observe behavior

    Actual Behavior:

    App crashes

    Expected Behavior:

I can purchase the new table, and play any other purchased table.

    Additional Info:

This bug affects all tables in the app. I now can't play a single table in Zen Pinball HD.

Engineers are looking at my logcat logs to try and detect what's happening. Is anyone else seeing this issue?

My 1st gen N7 took the update and I purchased the latest pack without issue.
it's running stock KK4.4.2 (rooted) which I think is the same as yourself.

        Couple of thoughts for you...
Are you running using ART as opposed to Dalvik? I'm fixed on Dalvik due to Tegra issues, but the N7 2nd gen isn't and I've seen you post elsewhere that you were trialing this.

Secondly - have you tried full clear cache, uninstall - re-install? Could just be a bum file causing it.

I don't use any custom launchers either - just stock OS.

        Hope you get it sorted.

Yep, I am running ART. However I was using Zen HD perfectly fine until this update clobbered functionality, so if ART is the issue, I'm calling this a regression.

And, yep, I've done all the usual troubleshooting associated with Android.

It's worth noting that I had a backup of the previous version through TiBu, so I reinstalled that. The previous version worked fine in every way. When the app auto-updated, the problems returned. So there is something fishy going on.

I don't know how the ART/Dalvik switch works, as it doesn't work on N7-2012.
Can you switch for individual apps? Could you change just Zen back to Dalvik? Or does it have to be all apps?

Zen should note, the next Android build is rumoured to have ART as default setting, so this could do with a look into in the next few months.

It's an all or nothing approach. The runtime chosen applies to all apps.

Whatever is causing this issue for me can surely not be ART related if the previous build was working perfectly. I'll be interested to hear what the Android engineers report back about the issue, and will update this thread with details.

OK, so I couldn't let this issue rest while Zen investigated, and I managed to resolve it.

From what I can tell, Nik's suspicions were correct and it does seem to be a regression with ART support in the latest version of the app.

If anyone else is experiencing this issue, I would suggest switching back to Dalvik in the Settings > Developer Options.

I ended up installing CleanROM 1.6, which was Deodexed therefore not ART compliant. This ROM also has Qualcomm optimizations to the Dalvik JIT compiler, so it is reported to work just as efficiently as ART does. So far I haven't noticed any difference.

So I'm playing the new soccer table happily now.

I still wish Zen had controller support implemented natively...

Sorry about the wait - I've asked about ART so I'll let you know what the plan is there. Glad you got to play though

+1 Me also - analogue nudge makes such a big difference now its implemented in The Pinball Arcade on Android.
Hopefully Pro Pinball will have it from day one, when released.

Good to hear you've sorted your problem mate.

Thanks Barbie for looking into the ART issue.

Anytime! Word is that we'll be looking into ART compatibility in the future. Sorry about the inconvenience in the meantime.

Thing is, the previous version worked just fine with ART activated. Something happened between releases...
