  • Nudging

Whats the best way on iPad to nudge, because for the life of me I can't do it properly. And seeing some of the ps3 and Xbox vids, it makes life easier to transfer between flippers.

Alas there are no instructions and whenever I try I just get an orientation switch. Which is bad for the obvious reasons.

I'm in the same boat... haven't been able to successfully nudge. I'd take an on-screen button to rotate the orientation if it meant i could nudge the iPad... the accelerometer is just begging for it!

Ok, I can sort of do it, though not one hundred percent and I ALWAYS get a tilt warning. On Thor (others too I guess) just practice before you launch the ball. Holding the pad give it a quick downwards flick, then once you got that, practice a left and a right nudge. The downwards flick will let you swap the ball to the other flipper. Tough as I said not one hundred percent and not without risking a tilt, though you may be able to adjust the sensitivity so it doesn't.

I, too, have found it difficult to nudge the table. When holding the iPhone in a way that makes it comfortable to use the flippers, jerking the phone is not easy. It takes a large jerk to trigger the nudge feature, but only a slightly larger jerk to trigger the TILT penalty.

I would prefer a swipe, or taps near the center of the screen, to trigger table nudges.

Because nudging on the ipad is hit or miss, the only time i do it is when attempting a bang back/death save when a tilt would not matter because i am losing the ball anyways. I can occasionally get a save by doing an upward nudge by snapping the ipad down in a fairly quick motion. I never attempt a left or right nudge because i often get tilts/tilt warnings and often get an orientation switch which screws me up good.

Yeah. Thats why in other threads I'm advocating a swipe gesture for nudging. It's the only thing stopping a great game from being godlike. Our console cousins have it way too good. They just hit a button. The accelerometer just doesn't cut it

I am going to reiterate how awful nudging is on the iOS. After playing on the ps3, i can say that nudging is almost completely useless on iOS. On the ps3, completing table objectives is much easier with the ability to CONSISTENTLY AND RELIABLY do a flipper pass by nudging. I can also do a successful death save around 50% of the time.

Unlike the ps3, there is no such thing as consistent nudging on the iOS.. When trying to do a nudge flipper pass, it successfuly does a flipper pass, does not nudge at all and the ball drains, get a small tilt warning, gets a large tilt warning, or tilts. And when talking about tilts, i mean on your very first attempt at nudging in the game. The ps3 never tilts on your first or second attempt. Because you never know if the nudge will activate or of you will get a tilt on your first attempt, the only time i nudge is during a death save if no ball save is lit and my success rate is probably 5-10%. I can't complete many of the timed missions (without great difficulty) that call for specific ramp/orbit shots because of the inability to do a nudge flipper pass. I have to settle for the slingshot pass or a drop pass to transfer the ball between flippers.

At this point, i would be happy with a single virtual button that nudges up. Or better yet, configurable zones that some games use on the iOS, in which you can draw boxes to designate different virtual buttons. Or like evolve mentioned, swipe nudging, but not like pinball arcade's swipe nudging which is useless as well.

Yeah, TPA is better than zen, but still useless, like you have time to get your thumb to the top of an iPad screen. So yeah, just swipe nudging where if your thumb slides rather than tap/presses it nudges. And an option for any body to turn it off, if for some crazy reason they either like the current system or slide their thumbs to use the flippers .
