I'm playing on a Mac. Every once in a while, the ball becomes lo-resolution. Usually, it snaps back to full-resolution. Is this intentional or a glitch? I haven't seen it in the other table I have (Fallout).

What Mac model and OSX version are you using?

That is a feature, out of question

I thought it was a bug at first too.
I even reported as such on the Steam forum.
It happens when you discover a secret area.
(The ball returns to its shiny self after you hit the spin disk.)

Here's the video I made to report it:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KHISSvjBO4

The designer stepped in and confirmed it's an easter egg.
I haven't played the latest Doom game but from what I've understood, the secret areas in the game are pixaleted as a tribute to the original Doom game. So it's kind of a tribute to a tribute
