  • Features missing from Zen Pinball 2 on Mac

With the Williams tables announcement, I became quite nostalgic of my Pinball FX2 playing days. Can't believe it is over 5 years since I last properly played. I still have my Xbox 360, but Zen is not releasing the new tables on that anymore. To my surprise, I stumbled on the fact yesterday that all the new Pinball FX3 tables has been and will presumably be released on Zen Pinball 2 on Mac. I didn't even once consider that as I assumed that as Zen Pinball 2 was the equivalent of Pinball FX2, that it won't receive further support.

I downloaded it, saw the Sorcerers Lair played smoothly and installed Back to the Future. It looks and plays brilliantly and I would dare to say even better than from what I remember FX 2 played like. So, I have a few questions and a few things makes little sense and I hope somebody can shed light (and give hope they might rectify it ) -

    1. Is the physics engine for the new tables e.g. Back to the Future, the same as FX3? I assume that the Williams tables will get the same "realistic" physics engine tuning as on all the other platforms where they will release it.
    2. Why on earth can't you save a game on exit? It is annoying as I these days only have an hour at most to play and to get anywhere score wise on e.g. Sorcerers Lair, a game will take a few hours. I assume that the Williams tables will be much harder to keep the ball in play so that should not be such a big problem.
    3. Why are there no online leaderboards? I didn't think I would miss it as I never played online or tournaments, but it is nice to see how well you are doing on a table by seeing what other scores players put up. Is there an online leaderboard that keep track of the top scores across platforms?

I'm still looking forward to the new tables and will play them irrespective if Zen makes any of these changes to Zen Pinball 2 but it would be great if they can look at these things.

So, I played my third proper game and managed to play through to the Time Paradox Wizard mode. Here is proof of my score just after the wizard mode and I let the ball drain as I was going to quit.

    333 mil score.jpg

I couldn't wait for all the balls to drain as I quickly had to quit so the score is not saved (as you lose all progress) and off-course I can't go back later to continue. I had a pretty good chance to score a billion in this game as I was on my first ball and I think second or third extra ball. Anyway, please add a save mode if possible as I asked for in my original post. I also have no idea if a billion is a good score on this table (doubt it, as you can score big points quite quickly) but it would be nice to see what other people have scored.

I left a review on the Mac Appstore (which will hopefully soon show)...

Plays beautifully but have some key shortcomings

As a Pinball FX2 veteran on Xbox 360 I am surprised how smoothly this plays on my 2015 MacBook Pro. I have experienced no stuttering even with a 5 ball multi-ball going. I was considering buying a new console so I can play the Pinball FX3 tables but all the new FX3 tables are available so I can play it on my Mac.

There are though two major shortcomings compared to my previous Zen FX2 experience. The first is that you can't save a game in progress on exit. Once you master a table, games lasting for hours are likely and it is impossible to finish them in one sitting. The second is that there is no online leaderboard. One joy of pinball is to know how you stack up against the best players. If Zen address these two shortcomings, I would happily rate this game as being perfect.

I guess I'll have to write a sob-story and share an image of proof on this each time I quit in disappointment with the hope that it will get some attention

So I had chance for one decent game this weekend and played Solo. After about 20 - 25 minutes of play I activated three scenes. I was still on ball one and with an extra ball for activating three scenes when I had to quit the game with no option to resume...

Ready for my next sob-story? I know you are, so here goes!

After 45 min of play, I completed all 7 main modes on the Solo table and was on about my third attempt at Scene 8. This screenshot was taken just after my wife requested I come and help with the baby. I knew I had only a few minutes left so started playing more loosely and ended up with a score over 300 million and still wondering what happens if you complete the last scene. All and all, about 50 - 55 minutes play. To reach a score of a billion will presumably take 2 or 3 times as long depending on what happens after scene 8 is completed and how many points you get for that.

Jip... a save function is desperately needed and I'll never know what a good score is on this table without a leaderboard.

Don't hold your breath. The Mac version has always been the least supported platform. I remember when it first came out that a random forum user was the person to announce the release because he or she happened to stumble across it on the Mac app store. I have asked for global leaderboards, controller support, and better keyboard bindings for years even though the steam version launched with all these features AFTER the mac version was released. I remember Barbie saying that the Mac version was a soft release and that features would be added in the future but that never happened and most of my repeated requests for these features over the years have been met with silence by the devs on these forums. Not to mention that the mac version never got the ZP3 upgrade.

Thanks for the update So far not a peep from anybody that can do anything about it.
