So, as the survey questions ask, what was your first music game? I'm curious. Please be sure to reply with what game/s you started with!
Kickbeat is my first music game
I started with an American music game (Amplitude, Rock Band, Audiosurf)
I started with a non-American music game (DDR, IIDX, DJ Max)

I got started with Frequency, and very shortly after Amplitude. But day of my senior prom in 2002 (man I feel old) some friends dragged me to an arcade to try "that dancing game". 4 hours of DDR later I was absolutely hooked. I've been an active Bemani (the line of Japanese music arcade games by Konami) player since, focusing on IIDX more than anything, but Drummania is also close to my heart.

DDR imports at Golfland in Sunnyvale for me, in 2000. Frequency series the next year. I did play Mr. Bones on the Saturn, too, but it's not a pure music game. Beatmania was always a little too much for me to handle.

Yeah, they got all the Japanese music games in early, included some test machines that never received widespread distribution. So it was Japanophile/DDR/bemani/anime fan central there every night. I remember playing Guitar Freaks and thinking, "man, with a better interface and some licensed music, this game would be awesome!" I haven't been back in years, though, since I don't live close enough anymore.
Well, I've still haven't played Kickbeat yet because it's going to be released here (in Europe) in 11 hours.
My serious passion for rhythmgames started about 2 years ago, with osu! (taiko mode, since I'm playing mostly on laptop). I've even reached the top 20-30 in monthly charts :D Also 1 month ago I got DJ Max Techinka Tune and platinumed it recently.
Vita really lacks of rhytmgames (there're just 3 games, 2 of them - DJ Max Technika Tune and Hatsune Miku Project Diva f were never released in Europe), that's why I'm really looking forward to playing Kickbeat.
Ah, global release time issues... Those have always confused me. Well, in 11 hours you're going to be very happy.
Ah, Osu! for PC. I've played the original (Osu! Tatakae Ouendan!) for DS along with it's sequel and American version EBA. It's a great game and I love the system it uses; so original!
DJ Max Technika is... well. I like the arcade version, I was super gung ho about the Vita release. But after some nasty political things with the US distributors and some similar things, I've kinda boycotted it. Have you played Project Diva though? That game is lots of fun; uplifting music and a great difficulty curve.
Have you played any of the DJ Max games that were on the PSP? They're available (or should be) for download over PSN.

My first music-based game experience was Parappa the Rapper on the original PlayStation
After that I was hooked on rythym games and bought many more including Um Jammer Lammy, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Gitaroo Man and Amplitude.
Speaking of project diva, here's an imported track in KickBeat (intro is shaky, but it gets better): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhhYbIGATQg
In my opinion PC version significantly exceeded the original. There're thousands of ranked beatmaps and huge community.
But, as I said, I mostly play osu!taiko. It's clone of the another game - Taiko no Tatsujin. Also I've tried osu!mania (Beatmania clone), but it was so hard...
Not yet. It was recently released in Europe on ps3. I hope they'll release it on Vita too. Although if it doesn't happen in a year, I'll probably get japanese version.
Nope, they're not available hereProbably for the same reason as Technika Tune. The only one PSP (actually minis) rhytmgame that I found was boom beats. It's really small, but still quite enjoyable.
I used to own a Taiko machine; I regret selling it but I live in a small house, so that and the IIDX machine, with the IIDX machine having favor for a lot of reasons...
But yeah, that game is absolutely rainbow pooping cuteness vomitingly the third coming of Christ. Loved playing it.

my first rhythm / music game was bust a groove, and i used to play DDR and PIU like... ages ago hahaha.
my twitter: GCmech
Ah, Bust a Groove, I don't hear that often. I still play DDR once in a while for exercise, and while there's a PIU machine near me, it's in a Dave + Busters, which means the pads are likely sticky from drunks spilling stuff on them. Oddly enough, sensors/etc well maintained.

It's unfortunate that the timing in Parappa and Um Jammer were so awful, because the music and creativity behind those games were incredible, and years ahead of their time. Also, Space Channel 5? Another rare mention. Although I'm not sure what I enjoyed more: playing Space Channel 5, or unlocking the enemy character from SC5 in Rez and then playing Rez with him.
If you like Vocaloid work, check out YuchaP; they're not as good as Hachi, but they're pretty damn close. Plus YuchaP has gotten featured in Sound Voltex and his stuff is easily available on Amazon MP3.Originally Posted by Solitude

My first music/rhythm game was
GITAROO MAN
on the PS2.
These are the other music/rhythm games I've dabble in.
Guitar Hero 1-3
Rock Band 1 and 2
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
Pump It Up
Amplitude, Frequency, Pump It Up (Arcade and Home), Guitar Hero 1-3, Rock Band 1-3, Guitarooman,
and, of course, all the rhythmic mini-games in other games.

I was doing some consulting for RedOctane. They wanted an evaluation of the game.

Well I first started with DDR when i was on vacation in Guam in a game center (year 2001), damn i sucked, lol
then i imported DDR and other rhythm based PS2 games.
finally guitar hero released and couldnt get my hands off. now i prefer rock Band > GH though xD
since PS3 came out i put myself on a challenge to complete every possible music/rhythm game to 100% (trophyvise) - i'm just stuck at Just Dance games (4 player trophies) + orgarhythm + Hatsune Miku PD DT 2nd although I FCd the last song
last game non PS3 game i played was rerave in vegas, damn i spend some money playing it xD
wish they'ld make a vita version ;P
just some videos i uploaded playing several music games.
